ABOUT US > Background
August 21, 1952 was a remarkable day for Maronites in Lebanon as it witnessed the establishment of the Maronite League by a group of committed Lebanese notables and intellectuals. Mr. Georges Tabet was elected President of the League by the first General Assembly. Eight presidents consecutively chaired the Maronite League to this day: Dr. Elias Khoury, Mr. Jean Abou Jaoudeh, Mr. Chaker Abou Sleimane, Mr. Ernest Karam, Mr. Pierre Helou, Mr. Michel Eddé, Emir Hares Chehab, and Dr. Joseph Torbey. The League gathers former Presidents of the Lebanese Republic, Members of Parliament and Ministers, as well as Senior Public Servants, Retired Military Officers, Magistrates, Presidents of Economic and Social Associations, Corporate Managers, and numerous intellectuals active in various fields.

The Maronite League is a non-profit private organization whose funds derive from annual membership fees as well as donations.

The League, renowned to be one the most influential communitarian institutions in the country, strives for the promotion of sovereignty, pluralism and democracy in Lebanon, as this will allow all Lebanese citizens to be equal in rights and obligations, a condition that is essential for preserving coexistence and promoting civil peace.

The Maronite League counts today about 1000 members of the Maronite elite and accepts a pre-determined number of new adherents every year.
